Tom Tugendhat was elected to the House of Commons in 2015 as the Member of Parliament for Tonbridge and Malling, a safe Conservative constituency in Kent. In 2013, he was chosen in an open primary.

Tugendhat was chosen chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee on July 12, 2017, making him the youngest person ever to hold the position. 

Tugendhat delivered a lecture at the Royal United Services Institute on May 29, 2018, outlining his personal views on British foreign policy. He argued for the FCO to be given more authority over overall foreign policy strategy.
