Tina Tchen, the CEO of Time’s Up, has resigned.
Tina Tchen, the president and CEO of Time’s Up, resigned on Thursday, becoming the organization’s second high-ranking official to leave amid a scandal surrounding the organization’s ties to former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
“She has made it her life’s effort to make workplaces fairer and equal for workers, as well as safer for women. That is why we asked her to lead TIME’S UP in the first place, and why in the two years she has been president, she has made significant changes,” the board stated. “This includes ensuring support for the Silence Breakers and Harvey Weinstein survivors, developing a program to center the voices of women of color survivors, calling out sexism in politics, providing large corporations with guidance on how to do the right thing, and holding them accountable when their workplaces are unsafe and unequal, and forcing the Golden Globes to address their toxic effect on the entertainment industry.
In conclusion, Tina has made a significant difference in the lives of many people, and we are appreciative of her efforts and effect. Accepting her resignation now demonstrates accountability and allows our organization to progress.”
New York Attorney General Letitia James revealed
In recent weeks, New York Attorney General Letitia James revealed that Kaplan, the organization’s chairperson, advised Cuomo and defended a former top staffer, Melissa DeRosa, in an effort to defame a woman who had accused him of sexual misconduct. Cuomo was determined to have sexually harassed 11 women, according to the investigation (Cuomo has rejected the allegations), and Kaplan resigned as chairwoman of Time’s Up as a result.
Following that original article, a New York Times exposé showed internal conflicts of interest, and the organization’s sustainability was privately questioned by some board members.
Time’s Up is a relatively new organization, having been created in early 2018 in response to the 2017 #MeToo movement.
“Other survivors and celebrities have spoken out against the organization, including Shonda Rhimes, the movement’s co-founder, who stated, “It’s tiring to me that Time’s Up has become perceived as a receptacle for and the focus of males attempting to cover up their disgusting acts.”
Tchen had also stated that an outside consultant was being sought to head the group’s restructure, which would include “feedback from survivors, supporters, critics, and partners.” Tchen had previously stated in a panel discussion earlier Thursday that she believed the Cuomo administration had utilized Time’s Up influence as a method of “cover.”
“We can understand how we could be utilized as a cover.” And, to be clear, what I believe happened with the Cuomo administration was that we were utilized as cover in ways I didn’t realize until the AG’s report,” Tchen added. “That’s a problem, and it’s something we can’t allow to happen. Our movement cannot be used as a shield for those who want to harm survivors or others.”
