Timothy Fehring, 15, dies after teachers blamed homesickness

Timothy Fehring – There has been a reorganization of the staffing of international tours as a result of the death of a teenager on a school trip abroad whose symptoms were misdiagnosed as homesickness. Melbourne Timothy Fehring, a 15-year-old student in year 9, traveled to Europe in June 2019 with 16 of his peers. The trip was manned by the assistant principle and the business manager.

According to a coroner’s report, the kid vomited in a trash can on June 23 after landing in Berlin, Germany, and one of the adults blamed it on a response to the spicy food supplied on the flight. Timothy, a student at Blackburn High School, complained of stomach cramps the next day after going without food the day before. He was given Panadol for the discomfort. Fehring puked again into a trash can at lunch, and it was assumed that he was “feeling the affects of jet lag, unfamiliar food, the heat, and change of climate.”

He got ill into a trash bin again on the way to dinner that night, but he

had texted his mother to let her know he was confident he would recover and was thinking about alternative meals he might eat. At that point, both parents thought he might have been homesick. The following morning, Timothy called his mother to say he was so sick he wanted to fly home, but his parents also thought homesickness might have been the cause.

One of the adults was informed by his mother that Timothy should be given some medication to lower stomach acid. He was now “far from other pupils, partially because they didn’t want to get sick from any bug he might be carrying, and partly because he was not as cheery as he had been,” according to the student.

He was taken to a pharmacy that evening to pick up some of the prescribed medicines, which he took before going to bed without having eaten dinner. By Wednesday, June 26, Timothy was pleading with his mother to take him home and expressed disappointment that people didn’t take his illness seriously.

He was eventually transported to the doctor at his mother’s request, but not before a walking tour during which he had to stop and rest in the shade and “looked fatigued, was very pale, and had significantly lost weight.” He was told he had severe constipation and gastro after a thorough examination at the doctor, and a suppository was ordered.

Timothy was given the all-clear to leave the hospital after the doctor acknowledged that his symptoms might have been related to his homelessness. From that point on, his parents believed their son was suffering from homesickness and constipation, and the staff had advised him to eat fruit and drink water.

The following day, Thursday, June 27, upon arrival in Vienna, Austria, Timothy asked to be left behind and was seen walking with the group around the city while carrying a vomit bag. He had not improved, was moving slowly, and appeared exhausted and puffy. He had dark circles under his eyes and was very pale, according to the research.

Timothy requested that staff take him to the hospital, but staff mistook his request for an attempt to evade the scheduled activities. That evening after dinner, he sat at the table for 90 minutes before puking up everything he had eaten. Later, staff contacted his parents to discuss his situation. In the end, it was determined that Timothy would fly back to Melbourne, but not before he had a medical clearance to do so.

The following day, he was transported to the doctor, but before entering, he required assurance from the staff and his mother. Timothy “did not appear terribly sick,” the doctor noted, despite appearing exhausted and pale-faced. After being given an anxiety medicine, he was let go. It had been “hot and stuffy” inside, so

Timothy went outside into the corridor while the staff member paid the tab.

By the time someone discovered him, he was lying on the ground, covered in vomit, and bleeding from the nose. In a panic, the employee “quickly but unsuccessfully sought to summon help from the doctor’s clinic by beating on the door” before getting in touch with the other employee. Eventually, a doctor appeared and began massaging his heart. After that, a defibrillator was brought from the clinic and utilized, but it failed to shock him since it showed a flatline.

Timothy was then transported by road to an air ambulance

Which flew him to the Vienna Center for Social Medicine. CPR was then started for five to seven minutes until emergency personnel arrived. Timothy’s pupils were at “maximal dilation” when he arrived at the hospital, a sign of brain damage brought on by a lack of oxygen.

His doctor tried to revive him, and a computed tomography (CT) scan revealed that his brain was severely swollen. On June 28, at 1:22 pm, Timothy passed away. When the staff learned of his passing, they broke the news to his father.

After she landed in Melbourne, his mother was informed by close friends at the airport. On July 22, Timothy’s body was returned to Victoria. A second autopsy was conducted, and the results revealed that he had died from a lung infection, stomach contents aspirated into the tiny airways, and stomach lining edema.

He may have died from a heart attack that went undetected because of the diarrheal disease and the resulting electrolyte imbalance, which put additional stress on the cardiovascular system. Following the incident, the coroner recommended that the Department of Education reconsider its policy on excursions and improve its ratios on international trips so that children would have greater resources in the event of illness.

The conclusion that staff should have sought and followed medical guidance for Timothy’s symptoms rather than attributing them to homesickness and travel anxiety led to the latter recommendation. The coroner’s recommendations have been adopted by the department.
