Mr. Heayel began working at St. Columb Minor on September 1, 2019, according to testimony given at a Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) panel hearing that was conducted remotely.
Mr. Heayel, who was absent from the meeting, was found guilty of selling s*xual services and uploading offensive pictures of himself online between 1 February 2020 and 31 July 2020.
The teacher was seen posing in the pictures, according to testimony given at the trial. When issues were brought up by the Local Authority Designated Officer in July 2021, Mr. Heayel was expelled from the school. Later that month, he was fired, and the TRA was given the case.
A banning order with provisions for a two-year review period has been proposed by the panel to the Secretary of State for Education. Although there was no proof that any students had viewed or accessed the photographs online, the panel’s members stated that they “did consider that, as a teacher, Mr. Heayel was likely to be viewed as a role model by pupils.”
The panel stated that it gave Mr. Heayel’s admissions, understanding of and regret for his behavior, and appreciation of the effects his deeds have had on the school and the teaching profession significant weight. He has been permanently prohibited from teaching, however, he can request to have the restriction lifted starting in July 2024. He will continue to be prohibited if his application is unsuccessful.
