American Ex-NBA player Terrence Williams pleads guilty in fraud case

Former NBA player Terrence Williams has pleaded guilty to conspiring to commit health care fraud and identity theft in relation to a multimillion-dollar scam against the basketball league’s health plan, authorities said. Williams, 35, entered his plea in federal court in Manhattan on Friday. He is set to be sentenced in January and faces a maximum of 20 years in jail for the conspiracy charge, and a mandatory minimum of two years in prison for the identity theft.

An email seeking comment was forwarded to his attorney. Williams was accused of being the mastermind of the scheme, which comprised of fake claims and paperwork being filed to the league’s plan for medical and dental payments. He and 17 other former players were accused in an indictment in October 2021, and officials alleged at least $5 million in bogus claims were submitted to the plan between 2017 and 2021. Attorney for the Southern District of New York said Terrence Williams directed the plan and recruited others to be part of it, giving them bogus documentation to submit. Authorities said Williams earned at least $300,000 in kickbacks from the others for his services. In circumstances when individuals involved resisted, authorities said Williams pretended to be other persons and intimidated them in order to achieve compliance.

The former star had been on pretrial release but was returned into custody earlier this year, with prosecutors informing a judge he had threatened a witness. As a condition of the plea agreement, Williams will pay $2.5 million in restitution to the plan and forfeit over $650,000 to the federal government.

Terrence Williams Career, What is his profession?

In the 2013 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys traded down in the first round with the San Francisco 49ers, in return for a third-round pick that the team used to choose Williams with the 74th overall pick. Williams struggled in training camp adjusting to the team’s scheme, but by the end of the preseason, he had overtaken Dwayne Harris as the third wide receiver.

Williams started the year wanting to improve on a good rookie year, immediately establishing himself as a credible No. 2 wideout and deep threat opposite Dez Bryant by receiving six touchdowns in the first seven weeks. After a strong start to his season that included a critical first down reception in a 30-23 road victory over the Seattle Seahawks, Williams slowed down catching only two touchdowns in the remaining 10 weeks, finishing the season with 37 receptions for 621 yards and eight touchdowns in 16 games and starts.

With leading wide receiver Dez Bryant missing most of the season, Williams failed to establish that he was ready to be a number one receiver, which was hampered by the fact that he played with four different starting quarterbacks with differing degrees of expertise in the team’s offense. During the season-opener against the New York Giants, Williams caught the ball near the conclusion of the game but did not go out of bounds, allowing the Giants to win 20-19.

San Francisco 49ers

He concluded the game with three receptions for 34 yards. Three weeks later, Williams caught four catches for 44 yards and his first score of the season against the San Francisco 49ers in a 24-17 road victory. In the regular-season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles, Williams grabbed a three-yard touchdown in what would prove to be the final play of Tony Romo’s career. Williams ended the 27-13 road loss with three receptions for 33 yards and the aforementioned touchdown.

On March 13, 2022, Williams was selected by the Knights of Degen in the seventh round of the first FCF draft of the second season. He made his debut against the Bored Ape FC on March 16, recording a completed two-point convert and a nine-yard reception. Through the weekly draft, Willams was selected by the Zappers. At 0-4, Willams helped lead the team to their first win of the season, connecting on his third touchdown catch of the season from Johnny Manziel.
