This week, Tanya Kersey’s family posted a notice on social media announcing her passing. She founded the Hollywood Black Film Festival. She was 61.

Kersey’s sister, Lisa M. Kersey, announced her passing on Facebook on Tuesday. According to the post, the businessman passed away on Monday after “fighting several health difficulties” for years.

“It is with great sadness that I post the passing of my beautiful sister, Tanya Monique Kersey. My sister passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones yesterday evening,” Lisa Kersey wrote. “Although we will miss her dearly, we find solace in that she is no longer in in pain.”

In order to promote independent films and filmmakers from the African diaspora, Kersey launched the Hollywood Black Film Festival in 1998. Distinguished guests like Sidney Poitier, John Singleton, Forest Whitaker, Sanaa Lathan, and Loretta Devine were welcomed to the festival, called “The Black Sundance.”

More than 1,000 films from the United States, Canada, and 25 other nations have been screened during the festival.
