Octogenarian Bolpur-born Dr. Sushovan Banerjee was better known as “Ek Takar Daktar” (literally, “one rupee doctor”) for treating impoverished people for just one rupee.

Banerjee was well-known for treating patients at Re 1 per visit for about 60 years while based in Bolpur, Birbhum district. He received the Padma Shri in 2020 in recognition of his contributions to medicine. His name was added to the Guinness World Records that same year for seeing the most patients.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled Banerjee’s death. “Dr. Sushovan Bandyopadhyay epitomized the best of the human spirit. He will be remembered as a kind and large-hearted person who cured many people. I recall my interaction with him at the Padma Awards ceremony. Pained by his demise. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti,” PM Modi tweeted.

Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister, also expressed her sorrow over the doctor’s passing.

“Sad to know of the demise of benevolent doctor Sushovan Bandyopadhyay. The famed one-rupee-doctor of Birbhum was known for his public-spirited philanthropy, and I express my sincerest condolences,” she tweeted on Tuesday.
