Emry, who had a three-decade career, died on Thursday at the age of 88.

M. Stuart (Stu) Emry, who covered Pittsburgh on radio and television for more than three decades at WTAE and KDKA, was described by colleagues as “professional.”

Emry, a South Park character, died on April 14th. He was 88 years old when he died.

Throughout his career, he conducted interviews with everyone from regular folks to US presidents.

“Stu Emry was a reporter’s reporter…a newsman’s newsman,” former KDKA assignment editor Aviva Radboud recalled. “He had that unmistakable, broadcasting voice — and the skill that came from a wealth of news experience. He was the epitome of professionalism, kindness, and grace.”

Emry grew up in Indiana after being born in Limington, Maine in 1934. He served in the US Army in Germany as a Lieutenant and Rifle Platoon Leader after graduating from Indiana University in Bloomington. He moved to Pittsburgh in 1965 and, after a few years, decided to take a chance on a career in radio and television. Emry covered all of the major news stories of the day, from chemical spills and train derailments to high-profile murder trials and political scandals, first at WTAE and subsequently at KDKA. For his coverage of the partial meltdown at Three Mile Island in 1979, he received an award.

“Working the desk at Channel 4 – Stu sat directly across from me,” said former WTAE assignment editor John Poister. “He understood the vibe on the desk and often helped and advised a harried assignment manager. And I always knew when I sent him out on a story – he would bring back a solid, factual, straightforward piece. We need more Stu today!”

“Stu was a newscast producer’s dream: on target, on time, and a good guy,” said former KDKA producer David Solomon.
