Paralympics 2021: Stephen Bate plots revenge mission as silver medallist comes so close
Stephen Bate admits to kicking while defending his Paralympic time trial championship, but he’s already planning a vengeance expedition.
In the 4,000m tandem pursuit, Bate and pilot Adam Duggleby went faster than ever before, but their colors were still dropped by Flying Dutchmen Tristan Bangma and Patrick Bos.
The silver-medalist Scot will now focus on the time trial road race, which he is both the Paralympic and world champion in, which takes place next week.
And it’s safe to say the tandem combo is pissed, with Duggleby admitting that a pace issue in their qualification race cost them dearly in the final.
“That’s what you call a classic kicking,” Bate said. “We did our best but it wasn’t enough; their performance was great, and sometimes you just have to settle for second.”
“It’s disappointing emotionally, but rationally, we must be realistic. We did everything we could, but it wasn’t enough.” It might have gone a lot worse, but I’m just glad I’m standing here with a medal. It’s never great to lose, but you can still be proud when you receive canning from a bike like that. It’s a medal, but the color isn’t quite correct.
“Now we can focus on the time trial; it’s a tough route, especially in this heat, but we know it’ll work for us.”
Neil Fachie and pilot Matthew Rotherham always understood this race was about preparing for Saturday’s 1000m time trial, which is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it event.
They are the defending world champions in that event, whereas Fachie, the London 2012 gold medalist, is still bitter about his silver in Rio.
