One day before turning 16 years old, on March 9, 1997, Eto’o played in his maiden international match for Cameroon against Costa Rica, losing 5-0. When he played on June 17, 1998, in a 3-0 group stage loss to Italy, he was the youngest player to compete in the 1998 FIFA World Cup. He was 17 years and three months old at the time. On June 6, 2002, during the group stage against Saudi Arabia, Eto’o scored the game-winning goal to give Cameroon its lone victory in the tournament. It was his only goal for the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

Eto’o won a gold medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics and was a member of the teams that won the 2000 and 2002 Africa Cup of Nations.

He scored his only goal at the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup, where Cameroon placed second, in a 1-0 upset of Brazil in the group stage on June 19. Eto’o missed the game-winning chance in a 12-11 penalty shootout loss to Ivory Coast after a 1-1 draw, but he still finished the tournament with the most goals with five, helping Cameroon advance to the quarterfinals of the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations.

In order to attend the CAF African Footballer of the Year award celebrations in Togo, he missed a squad practice before the quarterfinals.

Inter Milan

After back-to-back victories with Barcelona and Inter, he joined Inter Milan for the 2009–10 season, when he made history by becoming the first player to win two European continental trebles. He joins Marcel Desailly, Paulo Sousa, and Gerard Piqué as the only players in Champions League history to have won the trophy with two different teams in consecutive seasons.  

After brief stints with Anzhi Makhachkala, Chelsea, Everton, and Sampdoria, Eto’o rediscovered his scoring touch with Antalyaspor in the Super Lig, scoring 44 goals in 76 league games. He was given the Golden Foot Award in 2015.

He led the group in a playoff victory over Tunisia in November 2013 that resulted in a 4-1 team victory on the road to World Cup qualification.  Following fellow countrymen Jacques Songo’o and Rigobert Song, Eto’o was chosen for the Cameroon team for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in June. He is now the third African to compete in four tournaments. On August 27, 2014, Eto’o announced his retirement from international competition after joining Everton.
