A task force made up of the Australian Federal Police and the financial intelligence agency AUSTRAC conducted raids on properties connected to Sam Karagiozis in Bulleen, Templestowe, and Malvern. They confiscated steroids, cash, and items related to cryptocurrency.

Sam Karagiozis had his bail condition changed for his brother’s wedding 

Karagiozis had his bail conditions changed so that he could attend his brother’s wedding and take care of his Greek-themed food stores. He was charged almost two years ago but was granted bail in mid-2019. In court, his bail conditions were relaxed so he could be present at his brother’s bucks night and wedding this month and manage his food stores.

Karagiozis had followed all the bail conditions since his release, but he wanted the curfew requirement lifted so he could be the best man at his brother’s wedding and attend the bucks night two weeks earlier. Removing the curfew would also allow him to be at his souvlaki stores at night. The court heard that Karagiozis had around 10 stores but couldn’t visit any of them in the outer suburbs of Melbourne due to the nightly curfew.

Under his bail conditions, Karagiozis had provided a surety of $600,000 and had to report to the police twice a week. He was not allowed to leave the state of Victoria. Karagiozis and Mr. Emmanuel-O’Neil, a 34-year-old police officer from Victoria, will appear in a hearing in March to determine whether they will face trial.

During his further hearing, prosecutors and police stated that their case against Mr. Karagiozis had become stronger since he was initially charged in March 2019. This was due to the statements of witnesses who claimed that he was the leader of the drug syndicate. According to the police, the syndicate used the dark web and Bitcoin accounts to obtain, purchase, and distribute drugs as part of a large-scale importation operation worth millions of dollars.
