Film of the Day: The Railway Children (1970)
After their father is unexpectedly jailed, the rich Waterbury children and their mother are forced to flee from their Edwardian mansion in London to the Yorkshire countryside in Lionel Jeffries’ renowned 1970 film adaptation of E S Nesbit’s 1906 novel.
We follow the kids on a variety of adventures as they adjust to their new home and surroundings, as well as their attempts to uncover the truth about their father, who may have been falsely accused of espionage.
The passing trains on the adjoining railway amuse Bobbie (Jenny Agutter), Phyllis (Sally Thomsett), and Peter (Gary Warren). They wave to passengers and become friends with Albert Perks, the station porter (Bernard Cribbins). Over the course of the film, we observe the kids’ boredom and comfort; the wait for good news is lengthy, but at least they have each other as the town begins to admire and accept them.
