Sage Marie Steele came from a mixed-heritage family background

Well-known American television anchor Sage Marie Steele was born on November 28, 1972, in Panama Canal Zone to an American Army family.

Steele’s family was stationed by the United States Army in numerous states and countries, including Greece and Belgium, before returning to Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 1984 for her seventh-grade year.

After two years at Thomas B. Doherty High School in Colorado Springs, she moved to Carmel, Indiana, and graduated from Carmel High School in 1990 as a senior. She earned a Bachelor of Science in sports communication from Indiana University Bloomington in 1995.

Moving on to her family, She is the daughter of Gary and Mona Steele. Sage’s mother, Mona has Irish and Italian ancestors and is a role model for her daughter. Her Father, Gary was the first African-American to play varsity football at West Point in the mid-1960s. In 2013, he was inducted into the Army Sports Hall of Fame for his outstanding performance on the football and track and field teams for the Black Knights.

Sage has two siblings, Chad Steele and Courtney Steele. According to Chad’s LinkedIn profile, he is a senior vice president of media relations for the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens. He is also a married man who married Wendy Steele and has two children, Dylan and Colt.

Steele is married to her husband Jonathan Bailey. They first met during college, and after six years of dating, The couple wedded on October 30, 1999, and she is a mother of three lovely children. Jonathan is a stay-at-home dad who used to work as a personal trainer.

Sage Steele took to Instagram to share an emotional and heartwarming video capturing her two older children, Quinn and Nicholas, walking away hand-in-hand as they begin their sophomore and freshman years of college.

In the heartfelt post, Steele sees her beloved children embark on this new chapter of their lives. As they venture into the world of higher education.

However, Nicholas expressed that one of the reasons he chose to attend High Point University was to be closer to his older sister, Quinn.

With a mix of humor and tenderness, Steele playfully reminded her college-bound children not to forget to call their “momma” once a week-ish, ensuring they stay connected to their family back home, including their little sister, Evan.

Sage Marie Steele began her television sports reporting career as a news producer and reporter at WSBT-TV, a CBS affiliate in South Bend, Indiana, from 1995 to 1997. Then she work on WISH-TV, another CBS affiliate in Indianapolis, Indiana, where she served as the weekend morning sports anchor and weekday reporter. Steele covered prominent events such as the Indianapolis Colts, Indiana Pacers, Indianapolis 500, Brickyard 400, and local college and high school sports during her tenure at WISH-TV.

In 2007, she joined ESPN and made her debut on the 6:00 p.m. ET edition of SportsCenter. Over the years, Steele became the host of NBA Countdown on ESPN and ABC during the 2013–14 NBA season. Additionally, she co-hosted the Miss America pageant in 2017 and 2018 alongside Chris Harrison and hosted the Scripps National Spelling Bee from 2010 to 2013. Further, she also appears as a guest host on The View in 2014.

Steele drives the pace car for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Brickyard 400 in 2013, where she shared a lighthearted moment with 6-time Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson.

However, in October 2021, Steele faced a significant setback when she was suspended with pay by ESPN due to controversial remarks she made on Jay Cutler’s podcast. The comments touched on topics such as COVID-19 vaccine mandates, women’s attire, and Barack Obama’s self-identification as Black despite having a white mother.
