All of that changed when he was given the opportunity to play wheelchair rugby, which was dubbed “murderball” because of its vicious, full-contact character.

“A wheelchair rugby program was run at the local PCYC by a local legend, Paralympian Tom Kennedy,” Batt recalled.

“All of my able-bodied pals got in the wheelchairs and began slamming into each other, but I was a little ashamed to jump in a wheelchair Because, at the time, I was getting around on a skateboard.”

“After a few weeks, I decided to get in the wheelchair, and it was the best decision I’ve ever made.”

He stated things “blossomed” from there, leading to an almost 20-year career in the sport.

“I was invited to some local training sessions and eventually made the New South Wales side before being asked to attend to the Australian selection camp and making the Australian side,” he explained.

“As a 15-year-old, I competed in my first Paralympic Games in Athens in 2004.”

Batt was a sports fan as a kid, but he often felt left out when he couldn’t keep up with his peers.

“However, once I discovered wheelchair rugby, I felt like — for the first time in my life — I was on an equal footing with everyone else,” he said.

“And when I played against my able-bodied buddies, I had greater upper-body strength than them simply because I had to pull myself about on a skateboard all the time, which was an advantage for me.”
