In an Army news release, his commander, Col. Jeremy Mushtare, described him as an “embodiment of an Army Special Operations Forces soldier,” “a tribute to the professionalism of the non-commissioned officer corps, and a staunch spouse and teammate.”
The press announcement ended with a single sentence: “His wife survives him.”
When rumors of an explosion at Kabul’s airport began to circulate last Thursday, Ryan’s mother called Alena. She expressed her concern and inquired if Alena had heard from Ryan. Ryan replied that she hadn’t, but that she would contact him. She assured her mother-in-law not to be concerned.
