Rosario Ibarra, the first female presidential candidate in Mexico, died Saturday at the age of 95 after a lengthy quest to find the fate of her missing son. She was instrumental in the development of the country’s human rights movement.
Her death was announced on Twitter by the National Human Rights Commission, which is now led by her daughter Rosario Piedra, who described her as a “pioneer in the protection of human rights, peace, and democracy in Mexico.”
After several years of poor health, she died in the northern city of Monterrey.
Ibarra’s son Jesus Piedra belonged to an armed communist group and disappeared, apparently at the hands of authorities, after being accused of killing a police officer.
Ibarra founded the Eureka Committee, a movement demanding information about the fate of her son and other disappeared persons, though his case was never fully clarified.

In March 2006, the PRD nominated Ibarra as their proportional representation Senate candidate for the LX Legislature (2006-2009) and the LXI Legislature (2009-2012); as a result of that nomination, she was able to secure a seat in the Senate representing the PRD; however, in October 2006, she left the PRD faction in the Senate to join the Labor Party (PT) faction as part of a political deal between the PRD and the PT.
