Robert Eugene Steinhardt aka Robby Steinhardt (May 25, 1950 – July 17, 2021) was an American rock violinist and vocalist best known for his work with Kansas from 1973 to 1982 and 1997 to 2006. He was co-lead singer/”frontman” and MC with keyboardist Steve Walsh.  The only original members of the band who were not from Topeka were himself and Steve Walsh. 

In 1982, Steinhardt departed Kansas for personal reasons, later fronting his band, Steinhardt-Moon, and then joining the Stormbringer Band as a member. He died at the age of 71.

He died Saturday at a hospital in Tampa, Florida, according to his wife, Cindy Steinhardt. She revealed on Facebook on Monday that he had just finished recording his debut solo album and was excited to get back on stage and go on tour.

Steinhardt, a Lawrence, Kansas native, co-founded the band with Topeka West High School alumni Kerry Livgren, Rich Williams, Phil Ehart, and Dave Hope, as well as Steve Walsh, a St. Joseph, Missouri native. According to the Topeka Capital-Journal, Steinhardt was a member of Kansas from 1973 to 1982 and 1997 to 2006.

Steinhardt’s wife Cindy said on Facebook, “We are beyond saddened as our lives were about to begin a new journey.” “Robby recently finished recording his debut solo album at Solar Studios with the great music producer Michael Franklin. Robby was ecstatic to be back on stage, doing what he loved, with a tour set to begin in August.”

Cindy continued, “I’ve always tried to share our life with you, but I ask that you respect our sadness at this time. On Robby’s page, I urge you to contribute your memories and photos of him. My only regret is that I won’t be able to show him how much he is loved by sharing them with him.”

 Meanwhile, a memorial to Robby was posted on the Kansas band’s official Facebook page. He was the one who brought them together as bandmates, they said.

Kansas issued a statement as well, stating, “Past and current members of Kansas would like to offer their greatest condolences on the passing of our bandmate and friend, Robby Steinhardt. Robby will live on in our hearts, brains, and music forever. What he gave to us as bandmates, to the people who came to our shows, and to the music of Kansas will be remembered forever. We adore him and will always miss him.”
