Song was mostly a center defender, although he could also play right back. Internationally, he participated in a record eight Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, serving as captain in five of them (the others being South Africa 1996, Burkina Faso 1998, and Angola 2010), and holds the record for most consecutive games played in the tournament with 35 first team games.
In 2000 and 2002, he won the CAF Africa Cup of Nations. Song was ousted as Cameroon captain in 2009 by new coach Paul Le Guen, who finally named Samuel Eto’o as the new captain but afterward raised concerns since Song had never been on the bench for Cameroon in more than 11 years. He remained there until 2004 before leaving for Turkey, where he spent four years playing for Galatasaray and won the Turkish Cup and two Super Lig championships. Then, in 2008, Song agreed to a deal with Trabzonspor, where he stayed until 2010 and won another Turkish Cup.

Song allegedly came very close to being hired as the manager of the Chad national team in late 2015, but no deal was ever made. Song was named manager of the Cameroon A squad, which is made up of players that reside in Cameroon, in February 2016. After being admitted to the hospital for treatment of a brain aneurysm and subsequently making a full recovery, Song resumed his coaching duties in 2017, just in time for the 2018 African Nations Championship qualification round.

After two losses and a tie, Cameroon finished last in their group and placed last overall in the tournament under his leadership. Song was one of 77 candidates that applied for the position with the Cameroon national team in April 2018.
