After a battle with cancer, Ricky Houghton passed away at the age of 62. He died on Monday morning, surrounded by whanau, in his West Auckland home. His passing was verified by Te Piringatahi O Te Maungaarongo Marae. He fought cancer for a long time, and on July 18, 2022, he lost the battle.

He has been referred to as a leader who sought and secured practical solutions for whnau as well as a tenacious and ardent advocate for communities.

Ricky Houghton was born in New Zealand on April 7, 1960. He was 62 years old at the time of his death. Gilbert Benjamin Houghton, an Englishman who served in the Mori Battalion during WWII, gave birth to him. He was born and raised in England and served as a Sergeant Major for the Royal Scots Greys.

He was in charge of a tank regiment in the Middle East and Italy. Tukino Kay Latimer, his mother, was also a Latimer from Te Patu, in this region of the Far North. She worked as a nurse’s aide.
