Rich, one of the race’s longest shots, pulled off one of the biggest Kentucky Derby surprises in history, running down the favorites in the stretch to win Saturday at Churchill Downs.
Rich didn’t even enter the Kentucky Derby field until Friday morning, when Ethereal Road withdrew from the race in the penultimate hour, allowing the first “also-eligible” to enter.
His most recent start was in the Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park when he finished third behind Derby also-rans Tiz the Bomb and Tawny Port. In 2022, he made all three of his starts on Turf way’s synthetic racing track.
Rich is owned by RED TR-Racing, which is owned by Rick Dawson, an Oklahoma native. Reed, who had his first Kentucky Derby starter Saturday evening, trains Rich Strike.
