Kadalie passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born in Cape Town in 1953 but had spent the previous seven months in Los Angeles, California, with Pollak. Kadalie was an ardent participant in the anti-apartheid movement.

She worked as a commissioner of the South African Human Rights Commission in President Nelson Mandela’s cabinet after the country gained independence. She formerly worked as a director at the Impumelelo Centre for Social Innovation, a non-profit that promotes public-private partnerships in low-income areas.
