Who is Ray Warren? Announced his retirement, Wife, Age, Net worth, Family, Wiki, Biography

Ray Warren is an Australian sports commentator who is best known for his coverage on the Nine Network of professional rugby league matches. “The Voice of Rugby League,” as he is known, is a nickname he has earned.

Legendary rugby league player Ray Warren has announced that he will no longer be doing sports commentary.

Ray Warren, a great rugby league commentator, has announced his retirement, capping a remarkable broadcasting career that spanned more than half a century.

Warren, affectionately known as “Rabs,” became the Nine Network’s voice of rugby league coverage, calling 99 of the 122 State of Origin matches played since the interstate contests began in 1982.

Warren has called 45 grand finals over his tenure, in addition to his Origin calls.

The 78-year-old has also called three Melbourne Cups and three Olympic Games for Nine.

Warren began his reporting career at 2LF in Young in 1966, after famously rolling marbles down a hill in his hometown of Junee and calling it a horse race.

Warren began his television rugby league commentary career with Channel 10 for midweek Amco Cup matches after three years at Sydney station 2GB.

Warren’s words throughout various Origin matches became legendary, including his “that’s not a try, that’s a miracle” when Queensland’s Mark Coyne scored the game-winning try in the 1994 series opener in Sydney.

Warren had not commented for Nine since the grand final last year, but after weeks of talks with the network, he announced his departure with no regrets.

“I had nothing to prove,” Warren told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“It’s been easy leaving the commentary box, but each time I came back I knew I was getting closer to making a fool of myself.

“After I called last year’s grand final between Penrith and Souths, I walked out feeling like I’d done a good job. I knew after that game it was my last.”

With Warren’s retirement confirmed, it’s believed that Mathew Thompson will take over as captain for the Origin opener in Sydney next week.
