2 Canadians from Quebec who were killed in Mexico
A source confirmed to CTV News that the two Canadians who were discovered dead from knife wounds at a resort in Mexico, a man, and a woman, were from Quebec.
Raphael Huppe and Fannie Lorrain have been named as the couple.
The Quintana Roo state prosecutor’s office reported on Tuesday that both were discovered deceased at a hotel or condominium in Playa del Carmen.
Additionally, the prosecution confirmed that the male victim was wanted by Interpol on suspicion of fraud. There were claims of an additional victim.
According to a statement given to CTVNews.ca by a Global Affairs Canada spokesperson, “Global Affairs Canada is aware of the death of two Canadian Citizens in Mexico.”
“In addition to being in touch with the local authorities to acquire further information, consular staff are prepared to offer families consular aid. No extra information may be given due to privacy concerns.”
Following the murders of two Canadian men at a resort close to Playa del Carmen, which prosecutors said at the time looked to be motivated by unpaid debts between gangs engaged in the international drug and weapon trafficking, two more Canadian men have died.
Gangland-Style Killing
In what has been characterized as a gangland-style killing, Playa del Carmen police discovered the bodies of four men dumped beside a housing complex, in the shrubbery next to an access road, in March.
Two accused drug sellers were killed in a gunfight in November by about 15 armed men who landed on a beach in Puerto Morelos, a resort town south of Cancun, as part of a gang war over control of the drug trade.
As of Tuesday, the Government of Canada officially advises Canadians to “exercise a high degree of caution in Mexico due to high levels of criminal activity and kidnapping.”
There are also a number of regional advisories for areas the federal government says Canadians should avoid non-essential travel. However, the regional advisories do not include Quintana Roo, the state where the two Canadians were found dead on Tuesday.
