Radu Lupu, a well-known Romanian pianist, died at the age of 76. Jenny Vogel, his manager, told NPR that he died “peacefully at his home in Switzerland on Sunday evening from various protracted illnesses.” Lupu’s renditions of Schubert, Brahms, Mozart, Beethoven, and Bartok, among other composers, were widely praised by fellow musicians as an inspiration and model of artistic expression.
The Enescu Festival in Romania reported his death, which was confirmed by his agent.
Lupu left the company three years ago. He was the rarest of artists, making only a few performances and only a couple of dozen recordings in a decade. From his earliest days, Lupu “had always expressed himself by singing”, and was given his first piano at the age of five. He began piano studies in 1951, as a six-year-old, with Lia Busuioceanu.
He made his public debut in 1957, at age 12, in a concert featuring his own compositions. Radu gave up composing about four years later, saying that he thought he would be “much better as a pianist”. He holds Romanian nationality.
