He guided the Stingrays to the Senior Championship victory in his debut season as coach, defeating Gold Coast 37–12 in the final. Kefu continued to coach the Stingrays, but stepped down in 2011 to become the Tongan national team’s assistant coach in preparation for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
