“Clemency for Quintin”
Prior to his execution, a petition termed “Clemency for Quin” had gathered over 170,000 signatures.
Jones’ clemency request was denied by the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles on Tuesday. Michael Mowla, his lawyer, suggested that race was a factor, citing a similar case in which the same board acquitted Thomas Whitaker, a White man convicted of murdering his mother and brother. Mowla then petitioned the United States Supreme Court for a stay of execution and a reprieve for Jones.
“The lack of consistency in the application of grounds for clemency — where clemency was recommended and granted for Whitaker, who is White, but denied for Mr. Jones, who is Black — offers a constitutionally cognizable argument that Mr. Jones’s race had an improper part in the board’s denial of his application for mercy,” Mowla wrote in court.
The request was turned down.
