At a news conference, Detective Superintendent Des Bray declared, “We have now been able to identify a motivation, the cause of death, and the location.”

Police claimed they received multiple tip-offs after going public on Tuesday, bringing them to the location where they allegedly discovered evidence of a “vicious” assault and a possible murder weapon.

“It’s more likely he was violently battered to the point where surviving those injuries was out of the question,” Bray claimed.

Hillier and the man charged with his murder, 43-year-old travel companion Adam Troy Bennett, are believed to have arrived in town at 4.30 p.m. on Sunday, according to police.

The local publican said Bennett entered the pub at 7 pm that night and by 7.30 pm he had been kicked out.

Police believe the alleged assault occurred within the next hour.

Hillier’s body was found the next day, 70 kilometers away at a home the pair had been staying at in Venus Bay.

“We do know that he was placed into the van and later he ended up on the floor in the shack at Venus Bay,” Bray alleged.
