Pete Carril was an American basketball coach. He was best known for his time as head coach of Princeton University for 30 years and his use of the Princeton offense.

Carril passed away peacefully this morning, the Carril family regrets to inform you. Carril, who was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1997, spent 29 years as the Tigers’ head coach, leading the team to 514 victories, 13 Ivy League titles, and 11 NCAA Tournament berths.

He was a 1947–48 all-state selection for Pennsylvania after graduating from Liberty High School in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

At Easton Area High School in Easton, Pennsylvania, Carril started coaching the junior varsity basketball team and teaching Pennsylvania history in the ninth grade in 1954. Carril transferred to Princeton University after spending a year at Lehigh University.

He is the only men’s coach with 500 victories who did not have his players receive athletic scholarships. He received 11 NCAA berths, two NIT invitations, and 13 Ivy League championships that he won or shared.

Prior to his retirement in 2006, Carril spent ten years as an assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings of the National Basketball Association. He was a coach in the National Basketball Association as well as at Lehigh University (NBA)
