Pete Antonacci, a contentious leader of Gov. Ron DeSantis’ election security squad appointed this year after a decades-long career in Florida politics and government, passed away on Friday at the age of 74.

Since the 1980s, Antonacci has been appointed to a number of roles by five different governors on all sides of the political spectrum, leading to an unrivaled career in state politics and government.

He was selected by DeSantis in July to head the newly established Office of Election Crimes and Security in the state, which last month brought charges against 20 criminals for casting unlawful ballots. The majority of people detained admitted to giving Florida investigators that they had obtained a voter registration card from their county elections supervisor’s office and thought they had been given official permission to cast a ballot.

In a statement released on Friday, DeSantis expressed how “truly heartbroken” he and his wife Casey were by his passing.

“He was a dedicated, tenacious, and assiduous public servant, lawyer, and respected professional — a friend to all in the State of Florida,” DeSantis said. “He vigilantly sought to uphold the law throughout his lengthy career as a Deputy Attorney General, Statewide Prosecutor, General Counsel, Supervisor of Elections, and most recently as the newly appointed watchdog over Florida’s election security.

His fighting passion will be missed, and his legacy will persist in the hearts and minds of many.”

Although Antonacci’s death was not given a cause by the governor’s office, the Florida Politics website, which broke the news of his passing, gave a heart attack as the reason.

All political parties expressed admiration and condolences in response to the news of Antonacci’s passing.
