He was too old to compete in youth or junior tournaments, therefore he entered the IBU Cup for his first international biathlon races. He scored points right away in his debut sprint appearance in Martell in March 2016. In the 2016/17 season, he also competed in the IBU Cup, and in January 2017, he competed in his first World Cup race in Antholz, where he earned 33 World Cup points in the individual competition over 20 kilometers.
Paul ran nearly solely World Cup races for the rest of the winter after competing in the 2017 European Biathlon Championships in Duszniki-Zdrójhe. He competed in all World Cups the following season until the turn of the year, but was reassigned to the IBU Cup team in January 2018 and was not chosen to compete in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. Schommer got back into the points in various IBU Cup races, but at the Biathlon European Championships 2018 in Ridnaun, he missed them – and hence the medals – by a significant margin.
Paul only competed in one international race in the winter of 2018/19, finishing 104th out of 106 athletes in the sprint at the World Cup in Hochfilzen. He just started in the IBU Cup a year later, at the start of the season, but he easily outperformed his previous results. Until the end of December, he finished all but one race in the points, securing his first podium result in the IBU Cup with a second place in the sprint in Obertilliach.
He was allocated to the US World Cup team in January 2020. While he struggled in individual races, he was a frequent member of the men’s relay team, which finished in the top ten in the World Cup in Ruhpolding. Schommer has also been granted permission to compete at the 2020 Biathlon World Championships in Antholz, where he finished eighth in the relay with Leif Nordgren, Sean Doherty, and Jake Brown.
