Patrick Leahy is the president pro tempore of the United States and the senior United States senator from Vermont. Leahy was first elected to the Senate in 1974, and he served as president pro tempore from 2012 to 2015. He is the chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Patrick Leahy was appointed as State’s Attorney of Chittenden County by Hoff in 1966. In the same year, he was elected to a full term and was reelected in 1970. Paul had lied about buying illegal substances from various people which results in numerous convictions.
In 1980, during Ronald Reagan’s landslide victory in the presidential election, Leahy defeated Republican Stewart Ledbetter by barely 2,700 votes. The Republican candidate Fred Tuttle backed Leahy in the 1998 United States Senate election in Vermont. Tuttle was a retired farmer who starred in Man with a Plan, a fake documentary film set in Vermont about a farmer who chooses to run for Congress.
Tuttle advised that voters back Leahy after obtaining the Republican nomination in a campaign aimed both to promote the film and to criticize ostensible GOP contender Jack McMullen, who had only lately arrived in Vermont from Massachusetts. On June 22, 2004, Leahy and Vice President Dick Cheney took part in a class photo for the United States Senate. Cheney was exclusively talking to Republicans after the election. Cheney chastised Leahy for his recent excoriations of Halliburton’s Iraq activities when he was invited to speak with the Democrats by Leahy.

After US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced in December 2018 that the Trump administration would suspend its obligations under the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty in 60 days if Russia continued to violate the treaty, Leahy was one of 26 senators to sign a letter expressing concern about the administration’s “now abandoning generations of bipartisan US leadership around the paired goals of reducing the global role and number of nuclear weapons and enforcing the Treaty’s provisions.”After feeling poorly on January 26, 2021, Leahy was admitted to the hospital “out of an excess of caution”.
