In a thrilling count, Patrick Cripps wins the AFL’s, Brownlow Medal.

Following the remarkable reversal of a punishment that would have rendered him ineligible by the AFL tribunal, Carlton captain Patrick Cripps has won his first Brownlow Medal.

With three votes in Carlton’s sad round 23 loss to Collingwood, Cripps won the AFL’s top individual award for the first time, edging off Gold Coast’s Touk Miller and Brisbane’s Neale to finish on 29 votes (27).

However, the 27-year-old can appreciate a lucky break at the tribunal.

After round 21, Cripps was given a two-game suspension for knocking Brisbane’s Callum Ah Chee unconscious, which would have disqualified him from the Brownlow Medal. However, the suspension was unexpectedly overturned in a protracted tribunal hearing on August 11th.

He was able to participate in rounds 22 and 23 when Cripps won with a unanimous vote.

For his 35 disposals and 12 clearances in the one-point loss to Collingwood that ultimately prevented the Blues from earning a spot in the finals, Cripps received the most number of votes in the count’s final announcement.
