Orrin Hatch, a long-serving Republican senator from Utah, has died at the age of 88.

Orrin G. Hatch, who served Utah for more than four decades and became the longest-serving Republican senator in history, died on Saturday at the age of 88.

His death was confirmed by his foundation in a statement that did not mention a cause. In 2019, he retired and was replaced by Republican Mitt Romney, who founded the Hatch Foundation.

He was a conservative on most economic and social issues, but he worked with Democrats on matters ranging from stem cell research to disability rights to increasing children’s health insurance multiple times over his long tenure. He also made friends on the other side of the aisle, most notably with the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy.

“He exemplified a generation of lawmakers brought up on the principles of comity and compromise, and he embodied those principles better than anyone,” said Hatch Foundation chairman A. Scott Anderson in a statement. “In a nation divided, Orrin Hatch helped show us a better way by forging meaningful friendships on both sides of the aisle. Today, more than ever, we would do well to follow his example.”

Hatch also fought for conservative causes including abortion restrictions and helped define the Supreme Court, notably defending Justice Clarence Thomas during his confirmation hearings against sexual harassment claims.

Ally of Donald Trump

Hatch became an ally of Republican President Donald Trump near the conclusion of his career, leveraging his position as chairman of the influential Senate Finance Committee to deliver a significant overhaul of the US tax code to Trump’s desk. In exchange, Trump aided Hatch in resolving a crucial issue for Utah Republicans by agreeing to dramatically reduce the size of two national monuments established by previous presidents.

Hatch, a longstanding senator who would have faced a tough primary struggle and had sworn not to run again, was persuaded to run again by Trump. Hatch, on the other hand, stepped aside and urged Romney to run in his place.

He also had a side career as a singer and recording artist who specialized in music with themes related to his religious faith, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

His wife, Elaine, and their six children survive him.
