The Yahoo! Sports website covered Huston’s performance at the 2012 Transworld SKATEboarding magazine awards ceremony with the headline “Nyjah Huston Cleans Up at Annual Transworld Skate Awards.” At the event, Huston won three awards: “Best Video Part” (for his Rise & Shine video), “New Era Fans’ Choice” (the only prize decided only by the magazine’s and Transworld website’s readers), and “Best Street.”

Yuto Horigome of Japan wins the gold in skateboarding at Olympics 2020, Nyjah Huston Out of the podium

Skateboarding is now an Olympic medal event, as Yuto Horigome of Japan earned the sport’s first-ever gold medal in the men’s street skateboarding final on Saturday night in the United States.

Horigome, who entered the Olympics rated No. 2 in the world behind American Nyjah Huston, cruised to the final on Saturday.

Kelvin Hoefler of Brazil took silver, and Jagger Eaton of the United States took bronze.

The biggest surprise of the day was world No. 1 Huston’s absence from the podium. Huston, on the other hand, made it clear from the start that he would not attempt safety runs and would instead go all-in on every effort. Three straight falls, however, effectively sealed his fate.

Horigome and Huston were the faces of Olympic men’s street skateboarding heading into these Games. Sure, the fact that they were ranked No. 2 and No. 1 in the world had a role. Huston earned gold while Horigome took silver in the final U.S. Olympic skateboarding qualifying event at Dew Tour in May.

Huston departed longtime board sponsor Element in the weeks running up to the Games to start his own firm, Disorder; his decks sold out within two hours of their release.

It was a bit of a shock that Huston, the media’s face of skateboarding, didn’t win a medal at the sport’s Olympic debut, but you had to admire how he went out swinging, remaining loyal to the sport’s spirit until the very end.
