Nirmala Mishra was an Indian vocalist who specialized in modern and film songs in Bengali and Odia. Music lovers hold in high regard the majority of her performances from the 1960s and 1970s. In both Bengali and Odia movies, she was regarded as one of the most talented and admired playback singers.

Well-known Bengali singer Nirmala Mishra passed away in the early hours of Sunday at her home in the southern Kolkata neighborhood of Chetla following a severe heart attack, a top physician caring for her said.

Mishra (81) was a Balakrushna Das Award winner who had long struggled with aging-related illnesses.

When contacted by PTI, the physician who was treating Mishra said that she had a severe heart attack at 12:05 a.m. and was then taken to the closest nursing home, where she was later pronounced dead.

โ€œHer body will be kept at the hospital tonight,โ€ he said.

Mishra was regarded as one of the best playback singers. She performed many songs for Bengali and Odia movies.

Some of the well-known Bengali songs she contributed her voice to include “Eamon Ekta Jhinuk,” “Bolo to Arshi,” “Kagojer phul bole,” “Eai banglar mati tea,” and “Ami to Tomar.”

Some of the film songs she sang are “Tumi Akash eakhun Jodi” and “Ami hariye felechi ganer sathire,” among others.

Nirmala Mishra was born in the year 1938. She was 81 years old. On the eve of Durga Saptami, she was born in Majilpur as the daughter of Pandit Mohinimohana Mishra and Bhabani Devi. Later, her family relocated to Kolkata’s Chetla due to her father’s employment.

The atmosphere in her family was musical. Both the elder brother Murarimohan Mishra and father Pandit Mohinimohan Mishra were well-known singers. Her surname was Bandopadhyay (Banarjee). Later, the title of “Mishra” was bestowed upon her family. On behalf of the “Kashi Sangit Samaj,” her father was also given the honorific titles of “Pandit,” “Sangitratna,” and “Sangitnayak.”

Her song ‘Nida bhara raati madhu jhara janha’ from the 1975 Odia movie ‘Anutapa’ composed by J. Adeni still remains one of the most admired Odia songs of all time. She also sang the female version of the iconic ‘chhapi chhapi baasanti raati..” composed by the famous music director duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal in the 1967 movie ‘Bhagya’, the male version of which has been immortalised by the legendary Odia singer Akshay Mohanty.

Nirmala Mishra also sang a number of unforgettable duets with the then leading male singers like Md. Sikandar Alam, Pranab Patnaik, Tansen Singh, etc. Some of the notable duets include: ‘mun tumaku bhala paae luchhi luchika’ from ‘Anupata’ with Tansen Singh, ‘Aa mayabini mana jochhana’ from ‘Ghara Bahuda’ (1973) and ‘Sei nilapari deshe..’ from ‘Suryamukhi’ (1963), ‘tike ruhana, rahi jaa na..’ from ‘Abhinetri’ with Md. Sikandar Alam, to name a few.

Eamun Ekta Jhinuk, Abese mukh rekhe piyal dale, Bolo to arshi, Kagojer phul bole, and other contemporary songs are among them. In 1976, she took part in Mahalaya by Uttum Kumar, Shymol Gupto, and Hemanta Mukhophadhay as well as the geetinattyas.
