A Cal State Northridge recruit who overcame a malignant tumor in his left leg to assist his high school team in winning a local basketball title passed away today at the age of 20 following a second cancer battle. Nick Herrmann, a player for the CSUN team who was chosen from San Diego’s Torrey Pines High School, had his cancer come back only a few weeks into his summer training.
According to the CSUN statement, Herrmann received his initial cancer diagnosis in September of 2018 and was informed he might never play basketball again. Despite being forced to skip a whole year of high school, he returned to the basketball team and averaged 10 points and five rebounds a game in his junior season before averaging nearly 19 points and five rebounds in his senior campaign.
Trent Johnson, the head coach of the CSUN men’s basketball team, said, “We lost a very great young man this morning at 7:40 a.m. He passed away in San Diego’s Rady Children’s Hospital, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
