Nayyara Noor is an Indian-born stage performer and Pakistani playback singer. She has given in several live ghazal singing performances on Pakistani television programs and local music venues.

At 72, the Bulbul-e-Pakistan, Nayyara Noor, died in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. Her nephew, Raza Zaidi, told her followers of her demise on his Twitter account. Raza wrote- “loving aunt (tayi) Nayyara Noor. May her soul R.I.P. She was awarded the moniker of ‘Bulbul-e-Pakistan’ because of her lovely voice.”

She had performed alongside various great artists like Mehdi Hassan and Ahmed Rushdi. Likewise, Noor sang ghazals composed by great poets like Ghalib and Faiz Ahmed Faiz. Even though she left the earth, she will be remembered for hits like “Roothay Ho Tum” and “Kabhi Hum Khoobsurat Thay.”

Nayyara Noor was born in India and spent her early childhood there. Her family and forefathers, belonging to a merchant class, were long settled in Assam having migrated from Amritsar, in Punjab. Her father was an active member of the All-India Muslim League and had received Pakistan’s founding father Muhammad Ali Jinnah on his tour to Assam before the split in 1947.

In 1957 or 1958, Noor with her mother and siblings traveled from India to Pakistan, residing in Karachi. However, her father stayed back in Assam until 1993 to look after the family’s immovable possessions.

She has subsequently sung ghazals penned by legendary poets like Ghalib and Faiz Ahmed Faiz and has performed with giants like Mehdi Hassan and Ahmed Rushdi.

Nayyara participated in the live ghazal singing concerts on Pakistan television shows or in concert halls throughout the country. She performed at mehfils and mushairas having earned a following among ghazal fans in Pakistan and India. Probably the most famous ghazal of hers (a form of song in Urdu poetry) was Ae Jazba-e-Dil Gar Main Chahoon, composed by Behzad Lucknavi (1900-1974), a renowned poet of Urdu naats and ghazals, playwright and songwriter of Radio Pakistan. Nayyara Noor later received numerous honors for this ghazal.
