Chen started figure skating at age three in a pair of his sister’s skates. He entered his first skating competition in 2003. From 2007 to 2009, he qualified to compete in the U.S. Junior Nationals at the juvenile and intermediate levels. He placed 10th and 3rd in juveniles at the 2007 and 2008 Junior Nationals. At the 2009 Junior Nationals, he won the intermediate men’s silver medal.
At the 2022 U.S. Championships in Nashville, Chen won his sixth consecutive men’s title, a feat last achieved by the legendary Dick Button 71 years earlier. Chen scored 115.39, a new national record, in the short program and 212.62 in the free skate for a total of 328.01 points.
