One morning this week, Melonzine Turner left a hospital after having undergone two stomach surgeries, having discovered her eldest daughter, Na’Mylah J. Turner-Moore was missing. As police scoured a neighborhood on Saginaw’s East Side for her small girl, Turner arrived still wearing her hospital robe and slippers.

A 14-YEAR-old boy has been arrested and charged with the murder of his 10-year-old stepsister after her body was found in an abandoned lot, police said.

Na’Mylah J. Turner- Moore was reported missing on Tuesday morning around 6:15 am, barely hours before she was found dead. Moore, of Saginaw, Michigan, was declared dead at the scene, Michigan State Police trooper Kim Vetter said. Police later confirmed the juvenile suspect, identified as Jameson Peterson, was in custody. On Wednesday, Peterson was arraigned on one count of open murder by Saginaw County District Judge Elian E.H. Fichtner.

Fichtner refused Peterson bail at arraignment, Michigan Live reported. He is being charged as an adult, pursuant to state law. According to Michigan Live, Saginaw County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Blair N. Stevenson said Moore’s stepfather called her biological dad early on Tuesday morning to ask if she was at his home. She was not, so he called the police who launched a search for the young child.

Pending Autopsy

A definite cause of death is pending an autopsy, while prosecutors said there did not appear to be a fatal weapon or sexual assault. The prosecutor also said there appears there was no misconduct on behalf of the father and stepfather. Moore’s mother was not there when she went missing. “This is a very, very sad situation,” said Saginaw Police Chief Robert M. Ruth.

Ruth complimented his policemen who first arrived at the scene and found Na’Mylah dead. “They performed what they were supposed to do, the way they were trained to deal with circumstances like this,” Ruth said. “They communicated with the parents of the child who was missing at that point in time and then discovered the child. From that point on, our detectives and Michigan State Police investigators did a tremendous job.” Peterson is expected to appear for a preliminary examination on September 21.
