Women’s health and rights Champion, Nafis Sadik, dies at the age of 92

Nafis Sadik was currently Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General with additional responsibilities as Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Asia, and former executive director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) from 1987 to 2000. She retired from this job in December 2000.

Nafis Sadik, a Pakistani doctor who championed women’s health and rights and pioneered the breakthrough action plan endorsed by 179 countries at the 1994 U.N. population conference, died five days before her 93rd birthday, her son said late Monday.

Omar Sadik says his mother died of natural causes at her home in New York on Sunday night. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Sadik will be remembered “for her substantial contributions to women’s health and rights and population policies and for her persistent efforts to eradicate HIV/AIDS,” his spokesperson said.

“She continually drawn attention to the significance of addressing the needs of women, and of involving women directly in creating and carrying out development policy, which she considered was particularly vital for population policies and programs.” Sadik is survived by her five children, 10 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

She was appointed Deputy Director-General in 1968 and Director-General in 1970. Prior to that, in 1964, Dr. Sadik was appointed Director of the Health Section of the Government’s Planning Commission. From 1954 to 1963, Dr. Sadik served as a civilian medical officer in various Pakistani armed services facilities.

Nafis Sadik has continuously called attention to the significance of addressing the needs of women, and of involving women directly in creating and carrying out development strategies. This is particularly relevant for population plans and projects in the Third World and developing countries. In these countries, her revolutionary plan for equipping females with information and the tools to control their own fertility has substantially altered the global birthrate.

In June 1990, the Secretary-General of the United Nations nominated Dr. Nafis Sadik Secretary-General of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), 1994.
