Dominic Perrottet is a politician from Australia. Since 2017, he has served as the Treasurer of New South Wales. Since 2019, Perrottet has also represented the Liberal Party in the Epping seat. He was previously the Minister of Labour and Industrial Relations.

Perrottet was a favorite to succeed Ms. Berejiklian as Premier, according to recent reports. Here’s what we know about the politician so far.

Dominic Perrottet set to become NSW Premier and replace Gladys Berejiklian after deal struck

Dominic Perrottet, the Treasurer of New South Wales, is expected to become the state’s next premier.

Mr. Perrottet has negotiated a compromise that will see Stuart Ayres, the Minister for Western Sydney, become the deputy Liberal leader, and Matt Kean, the Environment Minister, become Treasurer.

Mr. Perrottet said at a press conference on Sunday evening that he would be putting his name forward for Liberal leader, and hence Premier, in a party room meeting on Tuesday.

The ABC has learned that an agreement has been reached that will make the vote a formality.

Gladys Berejiklian’s surprising resignation on Friday came after the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) announced it was investigating her.

“I understand that this is a difficult period for our state,” he continued, “but I have great hope and optimism that NSW is in a very good place.”

Although he didn’t put his name forward at the time, the dust had hardly settled after Gladys Berejiklian’s abrupt Friday resignation when Mr. Perrottet was dubbed as the most likely candidate to succeed her.

The Member for Epping has traditionally been the heir-apparent, despite coming from the right, which is considered the non-dominant faction in the NSW Liberals.

He is now the Liberal Party’s deputy leader.

Further Information

Mr. Perrottet said he and Mr. Ayres would make a “powerful partnership,” but he didn’t want to predict the outcome of the vote on Tuesday.

Rob Stokes, the Minister of Planning, announced his candidacy yesterday.

“Rob Stokes is not only a good friend but also a very skilled part of our team. We encourage competitiveness “According to Mr. Perrottet.

Former Prime Minister John Howard endorsed Mr. Perrottet earlier today, saying he was the best candidate for the role.

“I believe his history, experience as Treasurer, and, most crucially, his dedication to economic change make him the perfect candidate to take over the helm,” Mr. Howard told Sky News.

Mr. Howard also stated that he has “great admiration” for other contenders such as Planning Minister Rob Stokes, Western Sydney, and Minister Stuart Ayres.

“I’m not knocking them… but I’m hoping Dom gets the job.”

After Transport Minister Andrew Constance revealed today that he will leave state politics to fight for a federal seat, Mr. Perrottet had one fewer top Liberal to worry about in Tuesday’s election.

Both Mr. Perrottet and Mr. Stokes, according to Mr. Constance, are “great people and good ministers” who are qualified for the job.

“All I have to say to them is figure it out… Mr. Constance said, “Make sure you’re back at work tomorrow because this pandemic is quite genuine.”

“I’ve been in Parliament for nearly 20 years and have never seen a leadership election.”

“It’s fine if the party room has a ballot, but I’d like stability.”

Dominic Perrottet Career

Perrottet secured Liberal preselection for the highly safe Liberal seat of Castle Hill in November 2010, with the support of right-wing power broker David Clarke, following the departure of sitting Liberal MP Michael Richardson. To take control of preselections, Clarke faced off against Alex Hawke, the Federal Member of Parliament for Mitchell. People elected Perrottet with a 12.2% swing in the 2011 state election, receiving 80.8 percent of the vote on a two-party preferred basis.

Perrottet was appointed Minister for Finance and Services in April 2014, following the resignation of Barry O’Farrell as Premier and the ensuing government reshuffle by Mike Baird, the new Liberal Leader.

Perrottet switched seats with fellow Liberal Ray Williams in the 2015 state election after electoral boundaries were altered. Williams was given Castle Hill by Perrottet to run in his equally safe Hawkesbury seat. Perrottet received 68 percent of the two-party preferred vote in his election.

Following Baird’s retirement as Premier, the NSW Liberals’ main factions decided to back his deputy, Gladys Berejiklian, as his successor, with Perrottet as her deputy. Berejiklian represents the moderate element of the party, whereas Perrottet represents the conservative wing. As a result, Berejiklian and Perrottet were overwhelmingly chosen leaders and deputy leaders of the NSW Liberal Party on January 23, 2017.

Further Information

Berejiklian was sworn in as New South Wales’ second female Premier later that day. With effect from 30 January 2017, Perrottet took over her former ministerial positions as Treasurer and Minister for Industrial Relations when Berejiklian reshuffled her ministry.

Perrottet attempted to steal Castle Hill from Williams in the run-up to the 2019 state election, claiming work-life balance and the fact that Hawkesbury was too far away for him to travel. This failed, with Williams retaining the Liberal nomination, and led to media allegations of severe party infighting, as well as Perrottet openly apologizing. Perrottet eventually dropped the Hawkesbury preselection in favor of his second pick, the equally safe seat of Epping. Perrottet was elected as a Member of Epping in the 2019 state election and reappointed as Treasurer in the second Berejiklian government.

According to a joint investigation by the Age, Sydney Morning Herald, and ABC TV’s Four Corners, iCare underpaid injured workers by up to $80 million and accumulated up to $4 billion in debt during his tenure. When the COVID lockdown was prolonged on July 7, 2021, Perrottet vehemently challenged his cabinet colleagues and NSW Health’s advice. Later, Premier Berejiklian stated that the decision to extend the lockdown was made to preserve the community’s health and safety, as well as to avoid deaths.

Perrottet went to Redfield College in Dural and Oakhill College in Castle Hill for his education.
