Along with Yvonne Brewster, Inigo Espejel, and Carmen Munroe, Hammond created Talawa Theatre Company in 1985, which went on to become one of the most well-known black theatre organizations in the UK.  It has championed reinterpretations of old British works and produced plays about the African diaspora that have won awards.

Hammond took the stage in a number of its performances, including King Lear, The Black Jacobins, and The Importance of Being Earnest. The Sweeney (1976), Wolcott (1980–81), a three-part ATV miniseries about a black detective stationed in East London, Black Silk (1985), Juliet Bravo (1985), Playboy of the West Indies (1985), Casualty (1986), and When Love Dies were among the television projects that came after (1990). She played Blossom Jackson again in EastEnders, this time returning with her on-screen grandson Alan Jackson to attend the burial of her on-screen great-grandson Billie Jackson.
