Mo Ostin, who spent many years as the powerful CEO of Warner Bros., started his career there as the controller in the middle of the 1950s. Norman Granz, Irving Granz’s friend, and neighbor’s brother had founded Clef Records. He was involved with Jazz At The Philharmonic, a global concert promotion operation that gave the label’s touring artists a live performance platform, when the business was soon renamed “Verve.

” Verve was finally sold to MGM Records after Frank Sinatra’s unsuccessful attempt to purchase it. According to reports, Sinatra was so taken aback by the company’s musicians and managerial style that he established his own Reprise Records in 1960 and engaged Ostin to run it. Reprise and Warner Bros. partnered in 1963. The Kinks were the first rock band he signed to Reprise. After seeing Jimi Hendrix play at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, he decided to sign him.

Ostin worked for Warner/Reprise for 32 years. He played a key role in both the creation of WEA Corporation and WEA International as well as Warner Communications’ acquisition of the independent Elektra label. He was the head of the Recording Business Association of America for two years and was regarded as a titan in the industry. He left Warner Bros. in 1995 and joined DreamWorks SKG’s music branch, which is part of the entertainment industry giant.

Ostin was admitted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. At the 2006 Grammy Salute to Industry Icons, he was presented with The Recording Academy President’s Merit Award three years later.
