Miles Warren Career, What was his profession?
The Dorset Street Flats, Warren’s first significant structure, were criticised as prison-like due to their diminutive size and exposed concrete. They were designed in 1956. The Dental Nurses School (1958), the Architect’s personal office and house (1962), the Harewood Crematorium (1963), Christchurch College (now known as College House) (1964), and the Christchurch Town Hall (1964) were among the many architectural types to soon adopt this domestic lexicon (1972).
Between these more substantial endeavors, Warren & Mahoney created a collection of exquisitely detailed homes, many of which were inspired by modern Danish models. These homes were made of clean, white-painted concrete block boxes with punched, recessed window openings and steeply gabled roofs without eaves or verges.
In 1959, 1964, 1969, and 1973, Warren & Mahoney earned the New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) Gold Medal. They received the Pan Pacific Citation from the American Institute of Architects in 1966, which was also presented to designers Kenzo Tange and Harry Seidler. In 2000, Warren received the NZIA Gold Medal as an individual. The only two architects from Christchurch to get the New Zealand Institute of Architects gold prize twice are Warren and Peter Beaven.

His work served as the foundation for an exhibition held in honor of his 80th birthday at the Christchurch Art Gallery, which was later displayed in 2010 at the Gus Fisher Gallery at the University of Auckland. A 2011 episode of the TVNZ arts documentary series Artsville featured a profile of Warren. Duncan Fallowell has criticized his work and its effects on Christchurch’s Victorian architectural legacy, saying that “his structures can’t achieve the simplest traits of good design or beneficence.”
In addition to his love of building, Warren was also known for being an enthusiastic and gifted gardener. The simplicity of the garden at 65 Cambridge Terrace (seen above) was praised. Working on the Ohinetahi garden with Pauline and John Trengrove started in 1977. This garden features a walled “red and green” garden, a formal rose garden, and a woodland garden. A showcase garden was also created by Warren for the 2009 Ellerslie Flower Show. Through the Ohinetahi Charitable Trust, Warren donated his home and garden to the people of New Zealand in 2012.
