Michael David Rock aka Mick Rock (1948 – 18 November 2021) was a British photographer. He photographed rock music acts such as Queen, David Bowie, T. Rex, Syd Barrett, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, and The Stooges, The Sex Pistols, The Ramones, Joan Jett, Talking Heads, Roxy Music, Thin Lizzy, Geordie, Mötley Crüe, and Blondie.
Often referred to as “The Man Who Shot the Seventies“, In his function as Bowie’s official photographer, Rock captured the majority of the iconic images of Bowie as Ziggy Stardust.

Rock began photographing the local rock music scene while at Cambridge, picking up a friend’s camera and making some friends and contacts along the way (including Cambridge native Syd Barrett and Mick Jagger’s younger brother Chris).
Rock also designed album covers for Barrett’s The Madcap Laughs, Waylon Jennings’ Lonesome, On’ry and Mean, Lou Reed’s Transformer and Coney Island Baby, Iggy Pop and the Stooges’ Raw Power, Queen’s Queen II (recreated for their music video “Bohemian Rhapsody”) and Sheer Heart Attack, Geordie’s Don’t Be Fooled by the Name, the Ramones’ End of the Century, and Joan.
On the films The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and Shortbus, he served as the chief photographer. On Bowie’s Sound and Vision DVD collection, he also produced and directed the music videos “John, I’m Only Dancing,” “Jean Genie,” “Space Oddity,” and “Life on Mars.”
As part of Bowie’s inner circle, Rock met and shot the musician’s friends, collaborators, and contemporaries. For Reed, he shot the cover of the seminal 1972 album Transformer and 1975’s Coney Island Baby, for Iggy Pop and the Stooges he provided cover photography for 1973’s Raw Power, for Queen the covers for albums Queen II (1974) and Sheer Heart Attack (1974), for The Ramones he shot the cover of End of the Century (1980) and for Joan Jett he shot the cover of I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll (1981).
His photography put him on the map, but his videography left an unforgettable impression as well.
He worked as the official photographer and then filmmaker for David Bowie. In 2011, as part of the Creator’s Project, he remade one of their earlier clips, “Life on Mars,” alongside Clay. He also directed Bowie’s “John, I’m Only Dancing,” “Jean Genie,” and “Space Oddity” music videos.
Mick was preparing an exhibit in Fresh York in 2011 that included a retrospective of his work as well as new candids of celebrities like Lady Gaga. He talked to Rolling Stone about his early pre-MTV music videos and his thoughts on modern music videos.
