A man has made a £200,000 legal claim against his employers after he lost half of his skull following a work night out.
According to multiple reports, Michael Brockie is bringing PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) to court over a ‘duty of care they supposedly owed him during an employee night out. The Financial Times alleges that the expedition was organized by a PWC manager in the firm’s Reading branch in April 2019, in which colleagues were allegedly invited to attend a ‘pub golf’ event spanning nine different bars and clubs.
“Workers were pushed to gulp each drink in as few mouthfuls as possible to earn the lowest ‘score’ — with scorecards printed and circulated in the office — and the event ‘encouraged excessive consumption of alcohol’”, according to court records seen by The Financial Times.
The newspaper’s article continued: “Brockie, who was at the time a senior associate in PwC’s audit department, alleges he became ‘so intoxicated’ that after 10 pm he had no recollection of events and was eventually found lying on the street after falling. “ He had a ‘moderate-severe brain injury and returned to work roughly six months after the incident, first working part-time, according to the claim, which noted that he still had ‘persistent cognitive symptoms.’”
According to the Daily Mail, 28-year-old Brockie had to have part of his skull removed by physicians in order to facilitate his recuperation. The BBC stated that Brockie sought damages of £200,000 over claims PWC was “indirectly” responsible for alleged carelessness and that it “failed to take reasonable care” of staff.
