In May 1984, Martin Edwards requested Watkins to join the board of directors of Manchester United Football Club. Watkins joined the PLC Board as a non-executive director in 1991 when Martin Edwards floated Manchester United on the stock exchange. 

The only two directors that sat on both the Football Board and the PLC Board were Edwards and Watkins. At the 2005 AGM, Malcolm Glazer, together with two other directors, Philip Yea, a fellow non-executive director, and Andy Anson, campaigned against Watkins’ re-election to the PLC board. 

Watkins was in charge of a number of high-profile football moves both in the UK and overseas. He has also appeared before FIFA, UEFA, the Football Association, the Premier League, and the Football League disciplinary authorities on behalf of clubs and players. He also represented players and clubs in international and league compensation tribunals, as well as the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
