The creator of the Greater Lansing-based web hosting business Liquid Web, Matthew Hill, passed away earlier this month.

His obituary states that he passed away “unexpectedly” on July 13 in West Hollywood, California. It stated that he was a 41-year-old East Lansing resident.

Hill was a native of Lansing and a Holt High School graduate. He started Liquid Web in 1997 while still in high school, according to a message on the business’ Facebook page on July 20 announcing his passing.

In 2015, Hill resigned as CEO of the business and sold it to the Chicago-based investment firm Madison Dearborn Partners.

“… for 18 years, before he sold in 2015, with the help of his family and friends, he built the foundation for what we are today,” the company’s post read. “We are grateful for his entrepreneurial vision and technological talent that started the opportunity and success that all of us at Liquid Web enjoy today. We are keeping his family and loved ones in our thoughts.”

Over 45,000 clients use Liquid Web today across 150 nations. The business operates 10 global data centers, handles over 500,000 sites, and has locations in Lansing and Delta Township.

According to Hill’s obituary, Liquid Web formerly employed more than 450 people. The father and brother of (Hill) “worked alongside him throughout the company’s existence.”
