Portugal’s Health Minister Marta Temido resigns after pregnant tourist dies

The 34-year-old Indian woman apparently experienced a heart arrest while being moved between Lisbon hospitals. It follows a number of accidents this summer that critics blame on a staffing crisis across Portuguese natal units. Dr. Marta Temido had been the health minister since 2018 and is credited with leading Portugal through Covid.

But on Tuesday, the government announced in a statement that Dr. Temido had “realized that she no longer possessed the prerequisites to remain in office”. Portugal’s Prime Minister António Costa said the woman’s death was “the last straw” that led to Dr. Temido’s resignation, according to Portugal’s Lusa news agency. It follows a storm of criticism over the Portuguese government’s handling of staff shortages in maternity units, by temporarily closing some of them and forcing pregnant women to undergo unsafe transfers between hospitals.

Local media stated that the pregnant visitor died while being relocated from Lisbon’s Santa Maria Hospital – the largest in Portugal – because its neonatology section was full. Her kid was delivered in good health following an emergency cesarean surgery, authorities said. An investigation into the woman’s death has been initiated. There have been similar events across Portugal in recent months – including the separate deaths of two newborns whose mothers had allegedly been transferred between hospitals and endured protracted waits.

Gynecology and Obstetrics

Portugal’s dearth of health workers, notably those specializing in gynecology and obstetrics, has led to the government considering hiring from overseas. The closure of some natal units has resulted in overflowing maternity wards and high wait times, with opposition parties, physicians, and nurses placing blame on the former health minister. Speaking to local source RTP, the chair of the Portuguese doctor’s organization Miguel Guimaraes stated Dr. Temido departed because she did not have any method of addressing the current issue – before going on to praise her record in office.

However, Gustavo Tato Borges, the head of Portugal’s public health association, told RTP he did not expect her departure and was “surprised” that she had stood down while there are “severe problems” in the health system. Dr. Temido was largely praised for successfully directing the country’s vaccination rollout during the Covid-19 pandemic.
