Authorities have made an arrest and filed charges in the shooting death of a 6-year-old girl in Southeast D.C. earlier this month, in a shooting that shocked the neighborhood.
Marketwan Hargraves, 22, of Waldorf, was arrested and charged with First Degree Murder while Armed, according to D.C. Police Chief Robert Contee. He was arrested inside a residence in Southeast D.C.
Hargraves was “no stranger to the criminal justice system,” according to Contee.
Contee also stated that the city’s Crime Reduction Unit’s work – which focuses on high-impact areas of violence in the District – resulted in the arrests of 16 people who are currently in custody and face narcotics conspiracy charges in federal U.S. District Court.
According to Contee, the team discovered over a dozen weapons, cocaine, heroin, and other substances during the operation, and that further arrests are expected in the neighborhood where Courtney was murdered.
At the news briefing, Contee also stated that Courtney’s father was among those charged in the operation. “We want to be extremely open about it – you might not notice it all of the time.”

However, investigations are underway, and we feel this will make our neighborhood safer,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington, D.C.
